PART 1 [OF 2] Zihuat to PV

Feb. 22---Mar. 2, 2010

We flew from Olympia to Zihuatenjejo on February 22nd, beginning our VolkVenture:

Renting a car at the Zihuatenejo airport, we drove into Zihuat to a market, bought a styro cooler, ice and supplies, got some dinero and headed North. In 45 min. we were in familiar territory, Playa Troncones. The first 2 nights we stayed at Casa Manzanillo, a couple Km. North and the 3rd night at Tres Mujeres.

Day 4 we proceeded North along the coast stopping at Playa Azule for lunch and a refreshing swim and then for the night at Caleta de Campos. Our $4 dinner and $35 lodging was a highlight with my wallet.

Day 5-->heading N. Lunch break at Maruata, then we blew past Manzanillo as it looked too big and industrial to Melaque. Stayed there 3 nights. It was a walk up the beach from Barre de Navidad--pleasant all around.

Our 8th day and night we stopped by La Manzanilla, a cozy bay side discovered pueblo and settled into Tenacatita where I celebrated my birthday!

March 2nd found us gliding up to Puerto Vallarta to meet our friends, John and Kate Driscoll of Ketchum, ID.

PART 2---March 9---22

After a week at a condo in PV, we rented another car and headed North. We explored Punta Mita, Sayulita and ended up staying 2 nights just N. of Sayulita in San Pancho, also called San Francisco.

Day 3 we followed the coast to the seaside bay of Chacala where we stayed at Mar de Jade [Sea of Jade.] Our most expensive, but interesting lodging. We stayed there 2 nights.

Our 5th day out of PV we found ourselves in the former Mexican Pacific Coast Naval Center, San Blas. We stayed at Hacienda Flamingos, a former German consulate. Also known as the "Home of the No-See-ums," we departed the next day.

Our final day and night on the road we slalomed around potholes on the way to Teacapan. That evening we wandered by a wild day after wedding party and for some reason were invited to come in and partied on for several hours!

The next day, more potholes took their toll. I blew a tire, and after some friendly shrimp farmers helped me change it, we limped on in to Mazatlan. There we spent several days with Allan and Susan Fiksdal [Chris's near cousin, from Olympia] who had just been traveling mainly interior Mexico for the past several weeks.
